Pier man air­lifted to Hal­i­fax af­ter ex­plo­sion at his house

SYD­NEY — A 41-year-old Whit­ney Pier man listed in crit­i­cal con­di­tion with se­vere burns was be­ing air­lifted to the Queen El­iz­a­beth II Health Sciences Cen­tre in Hal­i­fax late Mon­day af­ter an ex­plo­sion and fire at his house at 22 MacLeod’s Hill.

Staff Sgt. Max Sehl of the Cape Bre­ton Re­gional Po­lice said the man and his brother, 38, were do­ing ren­o­va­tions in the house when some­thing caused an ex­plo­sion at around 8 p.m. “

Sehl said both men suf­fered burns. The brother was be­ing treated at the Cape Bre­ton Re­gional Hospi­tal late Mon­day with what po­lice de­scribed as non-life-threat­en­ing in­juries.

No one else was in the house at the time of the ex­plo­sion and fire, which caused “ex­ten­sive dam­age to the house,” ac­cord­ing to po­lice.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors from the po­lice depart­ment and the fire mar­shal’s of­fice will be at the house to­day to try to de­ter­mine the ex­act cause of the fire.
