Mathe­son, Bay Pan­thers maul Wild­cats; open 2-1 lead in se­ries

SYD­NEY — Glace Bay Pan­thers goal­tender James Mathe­son de­flected all 31 shots sent his way as his team shut out the host Syd­ney Academy Wild­cats, 5-0, in Game 3 of their Cape Bre­ton High School Hockey League play­off se­ries at Cen­tre 200, Mon­day night.

With the win, the Pan­thers take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven semi­fi­nal se­ries. Game 4 is slated for Wed­nes­day at 7:30 p.m. at Cen­tre 200.

Scor­ing sin­gles for Glace Bay in Mon­day’s tilt were Jonathan O’Brien, Jonny MacLean, Ryan Groom, Brett McKinnon and Ryan Binder.

The Pan­thers had a to­tal of 21 shots on goal. Wild­cats net­min­der Kilian Sch­lem­mer al­lowed four goals be­fore he was re­placed 4:25 into the third pe­riod by Gabe Dowie, who al­lowed one goal.
