Eagles Cup plans to be announced
SYDNEY — The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles will be making their own 2012 Memorial Cup announcement via a media conference at Centre 200, early Thursday afternoon.
According to a Screaming Eagles news release sent out Tuesday, the team is holding the press conference “to outline their intentions” regarding the Memorial Cup in 2012.
“I think we’re moving forward and we’d like to explore the possibility of bidding ourselves,” Screaming Eagles president Paul MacDonald told the Cape Breton Post on Feb. 9 after Halifax Mooseheads owner and governor Bobby Smith announced that his team will bid to host the 2012 Memorial Cup.
The Mooseheads hosted the event in 2000. Cape Breton has never hosted a Memorial Cup.
Shawinigan Cataractes brass have confirmed they’ll bid for the 2012 tournament, and Saint John Sea Dogs officials are said to be interested as well.
The 2012 Memorial Cup host team will be announced in April of 2011.
The Memorial Cup involves the champions of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Western Hockey League and the Ontario Hockey League, along with a host club, competing in a round-robin series, with the two top teams playing off in a suddendeath game for the championship.
The 2010 Mastercard Memorial Cup is being held in Brandon, Man., May 14-23.
