Ea­gles Cup plans to be an­nounced

SYD­NEY — The Cape Bre­ton Scream­ing Ea­gles will be mak­ing their own 2012 Memo­rial Cup an­nounce­ment via a me­dia con­fer­ence at Cen­tre 200, early Thurs­day af­ter­noon.

Ac­cord­ing to a Scream­ing Ea­gles news release sent out Tues­day, the team is hold­ing the press con­fer­ence “to out­line their in­ten­tions” re­gard­ing the Memo­rial Cup in 2012.

“I think we’re mov­ing for­ward and we’d like to ex­plore the pos­si­bil­ity of bid­ding our­selves,” Scream­ing Ea­gles pres­i­dent Paul MacDon­ald told the Cape Bre­ton Post on Feb. 9 af­ter Hal­i­fax Moose­heads owner and gov­er­nor Bobby Smith an­nounced that his team will bid to host the 2012 Memo­rial Cup.

The Moose­heads hosted the event in 2000. Cape Bre­ton has never hosted a Memo­rial Cup.

Shaw­ini­gan Cataractes brass have con­firmed they’ll bid for the 2012 tour­na­ment, and Saint John Sea Dogs of­fi­cials are said to be in­ter­ested as well.

The 2012 Memo­rial Cup host team will be an­nounced in April of 2011.

The Memo­rial Cup in­volves the cham­pi­ons of the Que­bec Ma­jor Ju­nior Hockey League, the West­ern Hockey League and the On­tario Hockey League, along with a host club, com­pet­ing in a round-robin se­ries, with the two top teams play­ing off in a sud­den­death game for the cham­pi­onship.

The 2010 Mastercard Memo­rial Cup is be­ing held in Bran­don, Man., May 14-23.
