Ma­raud­ers, Pan­thers post play­off wins

NORTH SYD­NEY — The Memo­rial Ma­raud­ers and the Glace Bay Pan­thers won their re­spec­tive Cape Bre­ton High School Hockey League play­off games, Wed­nes­day night.

Memo­rial 3, Riverview 2

The Ma­raud­ers took a 3-0 lead in their best-of-seven semi­fi­nal se­ries with the Riverview Red­men with a 3-2 victory at home at the North Syd­ney Com­mu­nity Fo­rum.

Memo­rial led 2-0 af­ter one pe­riod of play on sin­gles by Cur­tis MacRae and Tyler Stand­ing.

But Riverview bounced back and dom­i­nated the sec­ond stanza, ty­ing the game 2-2 on goals by Kyle Mul­ley and Zach Walsh.

The Red­men had a chance to take the lead about mid­way through the third frame when Mark Knickle was awarded a penalty shot, but Ma­raud­ers net­min­der Cyril Eavis made the save.

Matt Lyle lifted the winning goal for the home side less than one minute later.

Eavis made 30 saves for the win, while Riverview goalie Chad MacDon­ald turned aside 38 shots in the loss.

The Ma­raud­ers will have a chance to win the se­ries when the two teams meet for Game 4 at the County Recre­ation Cen­tre in Cox­heath, Fri­day at 7:30 p.m.

Glace Bay 5, Syd­ney Academy

The Glace Bay Pan­thers im­proved their best-of-seven se­ries lead to 3-1 over the Syd­ney Academy Wild­cats with a 5-1 tri­umph at Cen­tre 200.

Dy­lan MacEachern led the Bay boys with a pair of goals, while his team­mates Adam MacDougall, Ryan Groom, Ryan Binder all added sin­gles.

Robert Leyte recorded Syd­ney Academy’s lone marker in the third, break­ing Glace Bay goalie James Mathe­son’s shutout streak at 80 min­utes, 55 sec­onds.

Mathe­son, a call-up goalie, stopped 26 shots in the victory, while Wild­cats net­min­der Gabe Dowie posted 31 saves in the de­feat.

Game 5 is slated for Satur­day at 7:30 p.m. at the Cen­ten­nial Arena in Syd­ney.
