Marauders, Panthers post playoff wins
NORTH SYDNEY — The Memorial Marauders and the Glace Bay Panthers won their respective Cape Breton High School Hockey League playoff games, Wednesday night.
Memorial 3, Riverview 2
The Marauders took a 3-0 lead in their best-of-seven semifinal series with the Riverview Redmen with a 3-2 victory at home at the North Sydney Community Forum.
Memorial led 2-0 after one period of play on singles by Curtis MacRae and Tyler Standing.
But Riverview bounced back and dominated the second stanza, tying the game 2-2 on goals by Kyle Mulley and Zach Walsh.
The Redmen had a chance to take the lead about midway through the third frame when Mark Knickle was awarded a penalty shot, but Marauders netminder Cyril Eavis made the save.
Matt Lyle lifted the winning goal for the home side less than one minute later.
Eavis made 30 saves for the win, while Riverview goalie Chad MacDonald turned aside 38 shots in the loss.
The Marauders will have a chance to win the series when the two teams meet for Game 4 at the County Recreation Centre in Coxheath, Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Glace Bay 5, Sydney Academy
The Glace Bay Panthers improved their best-of-seven series lead to 3-1 over the Sydney Academy Wildcats with a 5-1 triumph at Centre 200.
Dylan MacEachern led the Bay boys with a pair of goals, while his teammates Adam MacDougall, Ryan Groom, Ryan Binder all added singles.
Robert Leyte recorded Sydney Academy’s lone marker in the third, breaking Glace Bay goalie James Matheson’s shutout streak at 80 minutes, 55 seconds.
Matheson, a call-up goalie, stopped 26 shots in the victory, while Wildcats netminder Gabe Dowie posted 31 saves in the defeat.
Game 5 is slated for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Centennial Arena in Sydney.
