employees. It seems this money they are trying to save for infrastructure is being done on the backs of the workers.”
Marine Atlantic media relations spokesperson Tara Laing said the company usually brings an extra vessel in on April 1, but based on traffic projections, is going to bring the commercial ferry freighter Leif Ericson in two weeks earlier on March 16. That vessel will depart North Sydney daily at 5 p.m. and Port aux Basques at 6 a.m., the opposite of last year’s schedule.
Laing said the existing crews in North Sydney will be supplemented, they’ll load and unload the two passenger vessels and the Leif Ericson.
The night crossing will depart North Sydney at 10:30 p.m., beginning March 16. Marine Atlantic has begun to contact customers impacted by that change.
On June 17, a fourth vessel will be added to the summer schedule.
“ The additional workforce is seasonal and based on the schedule; we won’t require that seasonal workforce to begin until June 17.”
