Basketball women hit nothing but net

Cape Breton Post - - COMMENT - Fabian McKenzie, head coach CBU women’s basketball, and members of women’s basketball program

On Jan. 30 the Cape Breton University women’s basketball team hosted the second annual Shoot for the Cure. Each university participating in Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s basketball takes part in this event, with all proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

This year our committee set a goal of $15,000 with all proceeds staying in our community. We are very happy to say that this goal was reached and we will be able to donate the funds to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre to aid in the purchase of new equipment to aid in the fight against breast cancer.

We want to send a huge thankyou to all of the corporate sponsors and everyone else who donated. We truly appreciate every donation.

The driving force was the committee of Jennifer Deleskie, Marlene Usher, Melissa Connors, Nancy Dingwall and Lindsey Smith. I also thank all of the volunteers who helped us on the night of the event.

Thanks as well to our honourary chairperson, Sue Turner, and the rest of the breast cancer survivors who came to support our event. Watching these brave women participate in the Survivor Lap during our game was moving, a tremendous example of what courage and inspiration look like.

They are all true heroes in our eyes.
