X-Men hold on to edge Capers

ANTIGONISH — The bat­tle be­tween the two su­per­pow­ers in At­lantic Uni­ver­sity Sport men’s bas­ket­ball ended in a close fin­ish yet again.

But this time, it was the St. Fran­cis Xavier X-Men who came out on top.

The X-Men held on at the fi­nal buzzer in an 81-80 win over the Cape Bre­ton Uni­ver­sity Capers at the Oland Cen­tre, Fri­day. Chris­tian Up­shaw led his team with a game-high 33 points in the victory.

The last time the two teams met, it was the Capers com­ing out on top with an 85-82 win.

Char­lie Spurr net­ted 15, while Chad War­ren fol­lowed with 13. The X-Men outscored the Capers 22-16 in the fourth quar­ter, re­bound­ing from a 39-36 deficit at half­time.

For the Capers, Jimmy Dorsey scored 18 points, fol­lowed by Phil Nkrumah with 17 and Paris Carter with 11.

The Capers dropped to 17-2 with the loss, but have 48 points and re­main in first place in the con­fer­ence stand­ings thanks to four-point wins. The X-Men im­proved to 18-1, but still sit in sec­ond place with 44 points.

CBU wraps up the reg­u­lar sea­son March 5 when they face the Uni­ver­sity of Prince Ed­ward Is­land Pan­thers in Char­lot­te­town, Fri­day.
