Why? CBRM must upgrade its wastewater infrastructure to comply with tough, new federal guidelines.
Total cost: Estimated cost of about $450 million to bring the CBRM’s wastewater treatment infrastructure up to standards.
The west harbour price tag:
The funding: Canada, Nova Scotia and CBRM each to pay one-third ($19.3 million).
The work: An estimated 270,000 hours of employment
The job: Eliminate three raw sewage outfalls into harbour; pipe wastewater to a new treatment plant at Sydport.
The rules: High-risk areas must conform to new regulations by 2021; medium-risk by 2031; low-risk by 2041.
