Why? CBRM must up­grade its waste­water in­fra­struc­ture to com­ply with tough, new fed­eral guide­lines.

To­tal cost: Es­ti­mated cost of about $450 mil­lion to bring the CBRM’s waste­water treat­ment in­fra­struc­ture up to stan­dards.

The west har­bour price tag:

$58 mil­lion.

The fund­ing: Canada, Nova Sco­tia and CBRM each to pay one-third ($19.3 mil­lion).

The work: An es­ti­mated 270,000 hours of em­ploy­ment

The job: Elim­i­nate three raw sewage out­falls into har­bour; pipe waste­water to a new treat­ment plant at Sy­d­port.

The rules: High-risk ar­eas must con­form to new reg­u­la­tions by 2021; medium-risk by 2031; low-risk by 2041.
