On this date in 1992, the fed­eral gov­ern­ment closed New­found­land’s north­ern cod fish­ery for two years to pro­tect dwin­dling stocks and al­low it time to re­cover. The mora­to­rium, which was later ex­tended, af­fected more than 19,000 fish­er­men and plant work­ers.
