There’s a Cape Breton connection to a member of Canada’s under-16 women’s basketball team that won its first ever gold at the FIBA Americas women’s championship. Sarah Donovan of London, Ont., is the daughter of Dr. Keith Donovan and Elsa Johnston Donovan, both of Glace Bay. Keith was an accomplished player with both Dalhousie and King’s College, while Elsa played at Mount Allison and Cape Breton University. Both were all-Canadians during their playing days. Sarah Donovan’s grandparents are Ralph and Henrietta Johnston of Marion Bridge and Bernie and the late Neil Donovan of Glace Bay. Canada defeated Brazil 72-71 in overtime to win the title on Sunday in Puebla, Mexico.
