Drunk driving, evading police lands man in jail
SYDNEY — A Little Lorraine man will serve weekends in jail for 90 days after he was sentenced on six offences Monday. Braeden John Maxharraj, 20, had previously pleaded guilty to driving with a blood-alcohol level exceeding the legal limit, evading police, assaulting a police officer, dangerous driving and two counts of breaching court orders. Several other offences were withdrawn after guilty pleas were entered. Maxharraj has been given a three-year driving prohibition and 18 months of probation. He will also have to pay a victim surcharge totalling $600. He was charged in connection with a Jan. 31 incident during which Cape Breton Regional Police noticed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. Despite attempts to have the driver stop, the vehicle sped away with police in pursuit. The chase ended in Dominion when the suspect abandoned the vehicle and led police on a short foot chase before being arrested.
