Drunk driv­ing, evad­ing po­lice lands man in jail

SYD­NEY — A Lit­tle Lorraine man will serve week­ends in jail for 90 days af­ter he was sen­tenced on six of­fences Mon­day. Braeden John Max­har­raj, 20, had pre­vi­ously pleaded guilty to driv­ing with a blood-al­co­hol level ex­ceed­ing the le­gal limit, evad­ing po­lice, as­sault­ing a po­lice of­fi­cer, dan­ger­ous driv­ing and two counts of breach­ing court or­ders. Sev­eral other of­fences were with­drawn af­ter guilty pleas were en­tered. Max­har­raj has been given a three-year driv­ing pro­hi­bi­tion and 18 months of pro­ba­tion. He will also have to pay a vic­tim sur­charge to­talling $600. He was charged in con­nec­tion with a Jan. 31 in­ci­dent dur­ing which Cape Bre­ton Re­gional Po­lice no­ticed a ve­hi­cle trav­el­ling at a high rate of speed. De­spite at­tempts to have the driver stop, the ve­hi­cle sped away with po­lice in pur­suit. The chase ended in Do­min­ion when the sus­pect aban­doned the ve­hi­cle and led po­lice on a short foot chase be­fore be­ing ar­rested.
