Eska­soni pow­wow kicks off to­day

ESKA­SONI — The first big pow­wow of the sum­mer is set to kick off to­day in Eska­soni.

The 24th an­nual Eska­soni In­ter­na­tional Com­pe­ti­tion Pow­wow is the first of six such events that will be held this sum­mer in lo­ca­tions across Nova Sco­tia.

The event is open to the public and prom­ises to have many First Na­tions peo­ple in tra­di­tional and colour­ful re­galia.

It also fea­tures con­certs, fire­works and two full days of dance and drum com­pe­ti­tions with lots of prize money at stake. All events will take place at the Noel R. Denny Me­mo­rial Pow­wow Grounds in Eska­soni.

• Par­tic­i­pants ar­rive

• 7 p.m. - Con­cert and so­cial

Satur­day

• All day - dance and drum com­pe­ti­tions, ex­hi­bi­tions and con­tests

• 12:00 p.m. - Grand en­try

• 5:45 p.m. - Grand en­try

• 9 p.m. - Con­cert fea­tur­ing A Tribe Called Red; fire­works to fol­low

Sun­day

• All day - dance and drum com­pe­ti­tions, ex­hi­bi­tions and con­tests

• 12:00 - Grand en­try There will be one other pow­wow in Cape Bre­ton this sum­mer. The Mem­ber­tou Pow­wow is sched­uled for Sept. 4-6.
