Wreck Cove Hy­dro Plant

• con­structed be­tween 1975 and 1978, south of the Cape Bre­ton High­lands Na­tional Park. • col­lects drainage wa­ter from 216 square kilo­me­tres of the Cape Bre­ton High­lands plateau to gen­er­ate elec­tric­ity. • wa­ter col­lects at Surge Lake about 1,100 feet above the pow­er­house. • pro­duces roughly one-third of NSP’s an­nual hy­dro­elec­tric­ity, with hy­dro pro­vid­ing 10 per cent of the util­ity’s elec­tric­ity • in the midst of $13.5 mil­lion worth of up­grades for dam safety and tur­bine main­te­nance • re­fur­bish­ment is ex­pected to ex­tend the life of the dam by 70 years.
