Wreck Cove Hydro Plant
• constructed between 1975 and 1978, south of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. • collects drainage water from 216 square kilometres of the Cape Breton Highlands plateau to generate electricity. • water collects at Surge Lake about 1,100 feet above the powerhouse. • produces roughly one-third of NSP’s annual hydroelectricity, with hydro providing 10 per cent of the utility’s electricity • in the midst of $13.5 million worth of upgrades for dam safety and turbine maintenance • refurbishment is expected to extend the life of the dam by 70 years.
