‘FA­THER ANDY’ ELECTED

On this date, in 1974, Glace Bay’s Andy Ho­gan be­come the first Ro­man Catholic priest elected to the House of Com­mons. Rep­re­sent­ing the NDP, ‘Fa­ther Andy’ was elected from Cape Bre­ton— East Rich­mond and re­elected in 1979. He was de­feated in the 1980 fed­eral elec­tion, los­ing to David Ding­wall by 294 votes. Af­ter the de­feat, Ho­gan never ran for public of­fice again. He died in 2002.
