Charity begins at home

Group helps family get needed home reno for disabled child

Cape Breton Post - - NORTHSIDE / VICTORIA -

Mariena Andrews of North Sydney, who has glutaric aciduria type I and cerebral palsy, is getting a $ 15,000 bath/shower renovation in her home with the help of President’s Choice Children’s Charity ( PCCC), and the staff and management of Atlantic Superstore in North Sydney.

Mariena, 17, was all smiles as she entered the Superstore in North Sydney with her family.

“It doesn’t hurt that she is the centre of attention,” said her dad, Rick Andrews.

Store manager Rob Gouthro was quick to acknowledge that Mariena was the reason they were gathered as he welcomed customers to take part in the presentation.

Gouthro said with generous donations from customers and staff, the store is able to raise funds that go directly to helping kids.

He said the President’s Choice Children’s in- store fundraiser takes place twice a year, adding that in 2014, more than $5 million was raised by PCCC across Canada.

Mariena’s father, Rick Andrews was at a loss for words.

“Mariena has full needs, has to be looked after from top to bottom, and her setup right now isn’t adequate to meet her needs,” said Andrews, a fulltime paramedic based on the Northside. “This is going to go a long way to address those needs, it’s literally unbeliev- able. I hadn’t realized that anything like this was possible.”

He said Mariena is fully aware of what this means for her and her family, adding that he expects the renovations will begin as soon as possible.

“Anybody that has a disabled child that needs assistance, the PC Charity is fantastic. I encourage those people to get an application,” he said. “It can go a long way to assisting a family in the care of a special needs child. It makes a huge difference.”
