We, the fam­ily of the late Jack Tighe, are heart bro­ken to an­nounce the peace­ful pass­ing of our won­der­ful fa­ther, grand­fa­ther, great-grand­fa­ther, brother and un­cle.

John Wal­lace ‘ Jack’ Tighe, of Olive Street, New Water­ford, passed away peace­fully at the New Water­ford Con­sol­i­dated Hos­pi­tal, July 8, 2015, at the age of 86.

Born in New Vic­to­ria, Jack was the son of the late John and Lena (Turnbull) Tighe.

He re­tired from Cape Bre­ton De­vel­op­ment Corp. af­ter more than 40 years work­ing at 12 Col­liery and re­tir­ing from Lin­gan Mine as an over­man. Jack served proudly the peo­ple of New Water­ford as a town coun­cil­lor for many years. He was also in­volved with Com­bined Christ­mas Giv­ing, serv­ing as one of the found­ing or­ga­niz­ers and dad stayed very in­volved un­til re­cent months. Jack was also ded­i­cated to his Parish of St. Leonard, sit­ting on parish coun­cil for many years at the for­mer St. Agnes parish.

A true Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan, he spent many hours watch­ing both of his beloved teams, al­ways don­ning a hat of ei­ther.

Dad is sur­vived by his daugh­ters, Bar­bara, Colleen (Wayne), Madonna and his son, Brian; spe­cial friend, Min­nie Liv­ing­stone; niece, Wil­lena, whom he thought of as another daugh­ter; grand­chil­dren, Lanna, Richelle, Lisa, Matthew, Laura, Jack­son and Bri­alee; five great­grand­chil­dren, Tucker, Parker, Cal, El­lie and baby Kate; sis­ters, Verna (Ho­race), Anna, Cather­ine, Lovie ( John), Agnes, Nita (Win­ston); broth­ers, Harry (Stella), Vince (Lorraine) and Tony (Elaine); in-laws, Billy, Colleen, Polly, Mary and Colleen and mom’s fam­ily Garfield (Betty), Barb (Stan) and Marie.

Be­sides his par­ents, dad was pre­de­ceased by his lov­ing wife, our mom, Carmel (Parr) and his beloved daugh­ter, Dar­lene Ashburn ( John). He was also pre­de­ceased by his broth­ers, Tommy, Ed­die, James and Fran­cie and his sis­ters, Vic­to­ria and Wil­lena; in-laws, Mike, Don, Bud, Ross, John, Bob, Richard and Al.

Vis­i­ta­tion for Jack will be held to­day (Fri­day, July 10) from 6-9 p.m. at V.J. McGil­livray Fu­neral Home, 380 Smith St., New Water­ford. A fu­neral mass of cel­e­bra­tion will take place Satur­day, July 11, 2015, at 10 a.m in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Av­enue, with Fr. Reg Cur­rie of­fi­ci­at­ing. Burial will be in St. Agnes Ceme­tery with a lun­cheon to fol­low at the Army, Navy, Airforce, Unit 217, New Water­ford.

Our fa­ther was lov­ingly known to many as a ‘Gen­tle Gi­ant’ or a ‘Big Teddy Bear’, but we will sim­ply re­mem­ber him as Da, Papa, and Old Papa.
