Rebuilding parking lot

Swiss Chalet remains open during construction project

Cape Breton Post - - BUSINESS - SYDNEY

The Swiss Chalet restaurant on Grand Lake Road will continue to see construction to its front and back parking lot for another couple of weeks.

Swiss Chalet franchise owner Darrell Flynn said it’s the first time new asphalt has been laid in the restaurant’s parking area in 29 years of operation.

“We’re doing the whole parking lot over. We’re replacing all the light fixtures, all the water lines, all the curbs, gutters, everything,” Flynn said recently.

Over the years, the spring frost would heave the pavement and manhole covers, creating a bumpy parking lot surface, he said.

Flynn said he’s been working with his contractor, Joneljim Concrete Construction Ltd., to minimize the disruption during the restaurant’s peak hours.

“When it comes time for lunch, say around 11:15-11:30 a.m., the (contractor) would stop everything (and) start directing traffic where to park,” he said.

“We haven’t seen any decrease in sales at all. Things are relatively the same, or up a little bit, actually.”

The six-week project should be completed by mid-July, said Flynn.
