Children age seven and older can participate
CBRM offers free summer skateboard program at area parks.
A skateboard program is taking place at area parks across the Cape Breton Regional Municipality this summer.
It’s part of the CBRM recreation department’s summer skateboard program.
Children age seven and older are able to participate.
Each Saturday through July and August there will be two sessions held at 9 a.m. and at 1 p.m. The program is two hours in duration.
If you’re interested, all you have to do is bring a board and helmet, and hit the park where the program is being held that week. There are no fees, and no experience is necessary.
Skateboarders can participate in both morning and afternoon sessions if the desire is there.
Internationally certified instructors will teach young skateboarders park etiquette, stance skills, and tricks like riding and dropping in.
For intermediate skaters, instructors can offer tips and add encouragement to further develop skills.
The program is offered at these skate parks on the following dates:
• Saturday: Island Skatepark, Coxheath, and Daniel Taylor Memorial Skatepark, Glace Bay.
• July 25: Island Skatepark, Coxheath, and Lawrence Mansfield Memorial Skatepark, North Sydney
• Aug. 1 - Island Skatepark, Coxheath, and Daniel Taylor Memorial Skatepark, Glace Bay.
• Aug. 22: Island Skatepark, Coxheath, and Daniel Taylor Memorial Skatepark, Glace Bay.
• Aug. 29: CBRM Summer Skate Barbecue at Island Skatepark, Coxheath.
Children under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian in order to participate. This waiver will be good for all sessions for the 2015 season.
In the event of rain, visit the CBRM Official Site Facebook page to find out if the event has been cancelled for the day.

Nathan Kelly, 8, of East Bay, practises his skills on one of the bowls at Island Skatepark in Coxheath on Saturday. Kelly was one of several young skateboarders learning new skills as part of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality recreation department’s summer skateboard program. It was his very first time at a skate park.
