Junebugs Baby in season’s best 1:57.1 at Northside Downs
Junebugs Baby is now two for three in 2015 after pacing the fastest mile of the season in 1:57.1 to highlight a 12-dash card of harness racing Saturday afternoon at Northside Downs.
Fraser Turnbull, who co-owns with John Turnbull Jr., rallied the six-year-old stallion from fourth at the quarter, clearing leader Putnams Power and Bob MacCormick before the three quarters and drawing away in the stretch to win by three lengths. Putnams Power stayed for second, with Sweet Sweet Rosco another four lengths back in third. It was one of two driving victories on the day for Turnbull, who also won with Jarrcoh in a new mark of 2:02.2.
Gerard Kennedy, with a driving triple, and Jason MacNeil, with a driving double, were the other top drivers on the Saturday afternoon card. Kennedy’s wins came with Mirages Magic in 2:01 for owner Irwin Claener, Fleetwood Cam in 1:59.4 for owner Angus MacEachern, and Private Practice in 2:01.2 for owner Heather Hawkins.
MacNeil opened the card by guiding Eastview Dexter to a 2:05.2 victory for owner Joe Tracey. The three-year-old won for the first time in 2015 by a quarter-length over Wiggleandgiggle and Anielori. MacNeil capped the driving double by guiding Panda Bear to a wire to wire win in 2:01.4, holding off a challenge from Broadway Bill, with Handee Man third, another three lengths back of the winner. The 10-year-old gelding is owned by Brian MacNeil.
Other winners on the card included Kerrona for Martin Bates in 2:04.1, Andro Peanut for John Willie Beaton in 2:03, Delta Force for Justin MacKinnon in 2:01.3, Thecolour Of Jewel for Colin Kelly for 2:00.2, and Surrealist for Randy Getto in 2:00.4.
