We, the family of Elsie Marion (Burns) Heading, 78, regret to announce her passing on Sunday, July 12, 2015.
Born in Whitney Pier, she was a daughter of the late Sanford and Mary Burns.
Elsie lived a full life. She raised five children while partnering with Gordon in their business ventures. For many years, Elsie worked in the hospitality industry and will be fondly remembered by the many students she trained and helped find their way. In 2009, she and Gordon were recognized by Cape Breton Tourism as ambassadors for their years of work. They were one of the first group of inductees into the Cape Breton Hall of Fame. Elsie opened her heart and home to friends and strangers.
She will be remembered and missed, especially by her constant companion, Max, her dog, who was with her in the end.
Surviving are her husband, J. Gordon Heading; children, Sharon (Bill MacKinnon), Patricia (Paul Kendall), Wanda (Peter Blom), Jim (Liz) and Graham (Darlene); grandchildren, Stephanie, Jamie, Adam, Geoffrey, Tanya, Tiffany, Jim, Josh and Jacquelyn; great-grandchildren, Jamie, Madelyn, Hunter and Isabelle; and siblings, John, Colin, Hilda, Henry, Diane and Theresa.
Elsie was predeceased by her grandmother, Mae Barrington; granddaughter, Nicole; brother, Sanford; and sister, Marjorie.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday from 12-2 p.m., followed by a service in the chapel at 2 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date.
Special thanks to Dr. Worth for his kindness and also to the palliative-care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their care and compassion during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital palliative-care unit.
