FAM­ILY AL­LOWANCE

On this date in 1945, about $20 mil­lion in cheques were mailed as the fed­eral gov­ern­ment made its first fam­ily al­lowance pay­ments. The money was to be used for the main­te­nance, care, ed­u­ca­tion and ad­vance­ment of chil­dren.

ROYAL CEL­E­BRA­TION

On this date in 1997, the Queen and Prince Philip cel­e­brated 50 years of mar­riage with a gar­den party at Buck­ing­ham Palace. It was at­tended by about 4,000 cou­ples from all over the world, in­clud­ing 30 from Canada. The Queen and Prince Philip have now been mar­ried for 68 years.
