Raising milk money
Glace Bay man organizing golf tournament to support food bank
Earle Wadden has one reason for organizing another golf tournament — children.
A golf tournament will be held at the Passchendaele Golf Club on Saturday, July 25, beginning at 11 a.m., and all the money raised will be used to buy powdered milk and other necessities for the Glace Bay Food Bank.
The tournament is being organized by Wadden in conjunction with the golf club and the food bank.
“It’s so kids can get powdered milk for their cereal,” Wadden said.
Wadden organized a similar tournament last year after learning that children of food bank clients were putting water on their cereal because they had no milk.
The tournament raised more than $2,000.
“People had powdered milk last winter and hopefully will be able to have it this winter,” he said.
Wadden has been preparing for the tournament for three weeks, including searching for sponsors.
“I’ve been making a lot of calls,” he said. “We really need at least 15 more teams to sign up.”
Wadden said there will be a number of prizes in various categories for men and women, including closest to the hole on a Par 3, closest to the line on No. 7 and the best score.
Harvey Ellsworth, owner of the Passchendaele Golf Club, said there will also be a ‘ hole-inone’ contest offered with a $10,000 prize.
Patricia Hurley, who along with Sandra MacPherson, is a food bank co-ordinator, said Wadden merely walked into the food bank last year and said he wanted to organize the tourna- ment.
“Harvey Ellsworth came on board with the tournament, it was successful and we hope it’s just as successful this year,” Hurley said, adding that the money raised last year went a long way in helping at the food bank.
“It’s a big help,” Hurley said. “Everything that everybody does for us is a big help and we greatly appreciate it. Thanks to Earl for putting this on for us and thanks to everyone who’s participating in this golf tournament.”
Registration is $100 for a fourperson team.
Anyone interested can sign up at the Passchendale Golf Club or telephone the club, 902842-1442 or Earle Wadden, 902849-0936.
Donations can also be made at the golf club or at the food bank, which can be reached by telephoning, 902-849-0750.
