New Water­ford Reds to host tour­na­ment this week­end

NEW WATER­FORD — The New Water­ford Big Daddy’s Pizza Reds are wel­com­ing Nova Sco­tia’s U- 21 fe­male team to its Mid-Sea­son Base­ball Clas­sic this week­end. The Reds, a mid­get ‘A’ team, is host­ing the tour­na­ment at the Gerry Marsh Ball Field in New Water­ford be­gin­ning Fri­day and run­ning through Sun­day. Reds coach Barry Long said he ex­pects the games will pro­vide some tough com­pe­ti­tion. “We are ex­pect­ing it to be a com­pet­i­tive tour­na­ment — the teams com­ing are seeded in the mid­dle of the mid­get ‘A’ Bluenose League stand­ings in the Hal­i­fax area,” said Long. “And, many of the res­i­dents I’ve spoke to are in­ter­ested in see­ing the fe­male team play for the first time in Cape Bre­ton.” The Reds open up the tour­na­ment with a pair of games on Fri­day when they play the Cole Har­bour Car­di­nals at 3 p.m. and the East Hants Na­tion­als at 8 p.m. The U-21 fe­male team will play the Woodlawn Wild­cats at 5:30 p.m.
