On this date in 1439, kiss­ing was banned in Eng­land to help pre­vent the spread of germs.

On this date in 1880, Dr. Emily Howard Stowe be­came the first woman li­censed to prac­tise medicine in Canada. She’d been prac­tis­ing since 1867, when she grad­u­ated from the New York Med­i­cal Col­lege. At that time, no Cana­dian med­i­cal col­lege would ac­cept a fe­male stu­dent.

On this date in 2013, cel­e­brated pain­ter Alex Colville, one of Canada’s most well­known mod­ern artists, died at his home in Wolfville, N.S. He was 92.
