On this date, in 1945, an am­mu­ni­tion barge blew up at Bed­ford Basin in Hal­i­fax, caus­ing one death and forc­ing half the city’s pop­u­la­tion to be evac­u­ated. Dam­age to­talled nearly $4 mil­lion.
