The Russian registered ship Akademik Ioffe docked in Sydney on Thursday and remained at the wharf until early Friday morning. The vessel was built in 1989 in Finland and is listed as a passenger cruise ship. Expeditions Online also refers to it as designed for polar research. Its current role is a tour of Nova Scotia as well as Sable Island, Quebec, Newfoundland and the French territory of St. Pierre et Miquelon, hoping to give passengers a view of everything from whales to bald eagles and vast seabird colonies. The online resource vesselfinder.com lists its recent stops as Halifax, Poland, The Netherlands and Iceland. It’s next destination is France.
