Trial to re­sume for Syd­ney Mines man

SYD­NEY — A pro­vin­cial court trial for a Syd­ney Mines fac­ing a host of of­fences will con­tinue in Aug. 12. Michael Fran­cis Cor­bett, 39, of Main Street, is charged with rob­bery with vi­o­lence re­lat­ing to the theft of 24 mor­phine sul­phate pills. He is also fac­ing charges of ag­gra­vated as­sault, pos­ses­sion for the pur­pose of traf­fick­ing ( mor­phine pills), as­sault with a weapon ( a wooden club) and mis­chief by smash­ing a tele­phone. The charges stem from an Aug. 27, 2014, in­ci­dent in Baddeck Forks dur­ing which a 57- yearold woman was hos­pi­tal­ized af­ter po­lice found her beaten and barely con­scious. The woman and Cor­bett are known to each other. She has since been re­leased from hos­pi­tal.
