Cubs hope to improve record at championship
The Cape Breton Cubs return to action today, hoping to pick up where they left off on Thursday at the 2015 Canadian Senior Little League Championship in Coquitlam, B.C. The Cubs enjoyed a rest on Friday after defeating the host Coquitlam team 8-5 in a game played late the previous evening. After losing their first two games in the seven-team round robin portion of the national championship, the Cubs (1-2) came out a bit flat and surrendered four runs in the first inning. However, the Atlantic Region representatives came back with a six-run second inning and never looked back as starting pitcher Dylan Mackinnon settled down and limited Coquitlam to just one more run before he was relieved in the sixth. Mackinnon was credited with the win, while Matthew Campbell recorded the save. Campbell, Trent Reardon and Zach Sutherland all had two hits apiece for the Cubs, while Dawson Martin had two RBI. The Cubs play East Nepean (Ont.) today; Lethbridge on Sunday; and Montréal on Monday. The semifinal and championship matches are slated for Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
