Philip Seymour Hoff­man won an Os­car for his eerie por­trayal of Tru­man Capote dur­ing his time re­search­ing the mur­der of a Kansas fam­ily for his book “In Cold Blood.” Clifton Collins Jr. and Mark Pel­le­grino co-star as the sup­posed killers, to whom Capote finds him­self drawn. Cather­ine Keener, Bruce Greenwood and Chris Cooper also star in this crit­i­cally ac­claimed 2005 drama.

Sweet teenager Sam Mont­gomery’s (Hi­lary Duff) fa­ther died when she was younger — but not be­fore he mar­ried and left her with an ego­tis­ti­cal step­mother and two dumb-as-rocks step­sis­ters. Sam is forced to work for pen­nies in her fam­ily’s diner, where the long­time em­ploy­ees try to look out for her. But can they help her hide her iden­tity from an anony­mous text-mes­sag­ing boy? Chad Michael Mur­ray, Regina King and Jen­nifer Coolidge co-star in the 2004 com­edy.

Jeremy Ren­ner, also a pro­ducer on this fact-based 2014 crime thriller, stars as jour­nal­ist Gary Webb, who be­comes the tar­get of a vi­cious smear cam­paign in the mid-1990s af­ter he ex­poses the CIA’s role in im­port­ing vast amounts of co­caine. the sale of which would gen­er­ate money for Con­tra rebels in Nicaragua.

4 Lavalan­tula

For­get about your run-of-the-mill arachno­pho­bia, this 2015 thriller finds Los An­ge­les be­set by a new, huge and lethal form of spi­der: the lavalan­tula, which has come erupt­ing by the score out of an­cient and pre­vi­ously dor­mant vol­ca­noes in the Santa Mon­ica Moun­tains. Snort­ing lava, these enor­mous arach­nids pose a deadly threat to L.A., un­less a ’90s ac­tion-movie has-been (Steve Gut­ten­berg) can stop them. Les­lie Easter­brook and Danny Wood­burn also star.

5 Bos­ton EMS

While this sum­mer’s’ “Save My Life: Bos­ton Trauma” fo­cuses on the med­i­cal as­pects of cri­sis sit­u­a­tions in the Mas­sachusetts cap­i­tal, this new com­pan­ion se­ries con­cen­trates on the city’s Emer­gency Med­i­cal Ser­vices ... the staff of which was put to a ma­jor test in the wake of the Bos­ton Marathon bomb­ings in 2013. Some of the first re­spon­ders who helped the wounded that day are fea­tured in this show as they ap­ply their skills to other sit­u­a­tions.
