Man to enter pleas on assault charges
SYDNEY — A Sydney Mines man charged with assault offences was released Monday from custody. Jason Matthew Gillis, 28, is charged with two counts of assault causing bodily harm, two counts of breaching court orders, and single counts of aggravated assault and assault. He is charged in connection with an incident May 31 at the Emera Centre Northside during which two men reported being assaulted. The two complainants were taken to Cape Breton Regional Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening facial injuries and one man was further treated in Halifax. Among the conditions of his release, Gillis is to have no contact with the complainants, he is to abide by a curfew, he is not allowed to possess any weapons and must report to police, once a week, by phone. Gillis is scheduled to enter pleas to the charges Aug. 24.
