Man to en­ter pleas on as­sault charges

SYD­NEY — A Syd­ney Mines man charged with as­sault of­fences was re­leased Mon­day from cus­tody. Jason Matthew Gil­lis, 28, is charged with two counts of as­sault caus­ing bod­ily harm, two counts of breach­ing court or­ders, and sin­gle counts of ag­gra­vated as­sault and as­sault. He is charged in con­nec­tion with an in­ci­dent May 31 at the Emera Cen­tre North­side dur­ing which two men re­ported be­ing as­saulted. The two com­plainants were taken to Cape Bre­ton Re­gional Hos­pi­tal for treat­ment of non-life-threat­en­ing fa­cial in­juries and one man was fur­ther treated in Hal­i­fax. Among the con­di­tions of his re­lease, Gil­lis is to have no con­tact with the com­plainants, he is to abide by a cur­few, he is not al­lowed to pos­sess any weapons and must re­port to po­lice, once a week, by phone. Gil­lis is sched­uled to en­ter pleas to the charges Aug. 24.
