Trial date set for men accused of murder
SYDNEY — A Supreme Court trial date was set Wednesday for two Cape Breton men facing a charge of seconddegree murder. Thomas Ted Barrett, 40, and Morgan James MacNeil, 24, both of Glace Bay, will now stand trial beginning Sept. 12, 2016. The trial is scheduled to run three weeks. The men are charged in connection with the murder of 21-year- old Laura Catherine Jessome, of Bras d’Or, whose remains were found in hockey bag along the shores of the Mira River in Albert Bridge in May 2012. The trial will be Barrett’s second murder charge in 2016. He is also scheduled to stand trial beginning Jan. 18 on a charge of second- degree murder in connection with the death of Brett Elizabeth McKinnon, 21, of Glace Bay, whose skeletal remains were found in 2008. Both Barrett and Morgan continue to be on remand as a result of the murder charges. Both accused are also serving time for unrelated offences.
