Trial date set for men ac­cused of mur­der

SYD­NEY — A Supreme Court trial date was set Wed­nes­day for two Cape Bre­ton men fac­ing a charge of sec­ond­de­gree mur­der. Thomas Ted Bar­rett, 40, and Mor­gan James MacNeil, 24, both of Glace Bay, will now stand trial be­gin­ning Sept. 12, 2016. The trial is sched­uled to run three weeks. The men are charged in con­nec­tion with the mur­der of 21-year- old Laura Cather­ine Jessome, of Bras d’Or, whose re­mains were found in hockey bag along the shores of the Mira River in Al­bert Bridge in May 2012. The trial will be Bar­rett’s sec­ond mur­der charge in 2016. He is also sched­uled to stand trial be­gin­ning Jan. 18 on a charge of sec­ond- de­gree mur­der in con­nec­tion with the death of Brett El­iz­a­beth McKin­non, 21, of Glace Bay, whose skele­tal re­mains were found in 2008. Both Bar­rett and Mor­gan con­tinue to be on re­mand as a re­sult of the mur­der charges. Both ac­cused are also serv­ing time for un­re­lated of­fences.
