Sen­tence im­posed on sex­ual as­sault

SYD­NEY — A Syd­ney man has been sen­tenced af­ter plead­ing guilty to a sin­gle count of sex­ual as­sault. Bernard Alexan­der MacLel­lan, 67, pleaded to as­sault­ing a woman while she slept by pen­e­trat­ing her vagina with his fin­ger. At the time of the of­fence on Jan. 28, MacLel­lan had been in­vited to stay the night in the apart­ment with the woman and her part­ner be­cause he was home­less. Hav­ing spent 180 days on re­mand, for which he was cred­ited nine months, MacLel­lan was sen­tenced to one day served by his pres­ence in court. He must also com­plete a twoyear pro­ba­tion pe­riod, is banned from pos­sess­ing firearms for the 10 years, must sub­mit a DNA sam­ple to the na­tional reg­istry and is to be a reg­is­tered sex of­fender for the re­main­der of his life.
