MEERY, Henry ‘Heinie’
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Henry Meery, age 91, on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at the New Waterford Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, Henry was the son of the late George and Helena (Stomal) Meery.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Henry was a proud coal miner; working 40 years in No. 18, 12, 26 and Lingan collieries, retiring in 1981. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas in Italy, France and England with the Lanark & Renfrew Scottish Regiment of Canada.
Henry was an avid hunter and fisherman; he taught his boys to do the same. He was known for keeping a beautiful yard and flower garden. But mostly, he was a kind man who was loved by everyone he met. Henry was a man of great faith who loved to attend mass. He was also an avid Blue Jays fan.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Florence (Currie) Meery; one daughter, Elizabeth ‘Betty’ (Mrs. Albert Rushton), Amherst; two sons, Michael (Helene), Hammonds Plains, Eldon (Michelle), New Waterford; eight grandchildren, Vanessa, Shawn, Kendra, Lynzee, Bonnie, Rickey, Paula, Michael; great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, two special nieces, Helen Rockett Landry and Freda Cameron.
Henry was predeceased by his daughter, Brenda, two brothers, Alfred, George, and two sisters, Freda and Elsie.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Ray Huntley is Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Leonard Church followed by interment in St. Michael’s Cemetery, River Ryan. The reception will be held in the Army/Navy/Air Force Hall.
