Cape Breton Post - - NEWS -

Port Morien's Thistle Lodge celebrates its 150th anniversary this week, making it the third oldest Masonic lodge on the island.

Members took part in the Morien Memories parade on July 30, with other lodges from around Cape Breton.

There will also be an open house on Aug. 1, at the hall in Port Morien from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., where members of the public can visit and learn more about the organization.

For those interested in joining, applications will be available.

The Thistle Lodge No. 36 is a Freemason lodge, and was first organized by the Grand Lodge of England in 1865 and was chartered in 1866.

The lodge continues its long tradition of raising money for charities, including the Glaucoma Fund and Alzheimer's, as well as scholarships. One of their most popular fundraisers are the fishcake and bean takeout suppers held three times annually, with the next one expected sometime this summer.
