New trial date set for Syd­ney man fac­ing drug charges

SYD­NEY — A new pro­vin­cial court trial date was set Tues­day for a Syd­ney man fac­ing drug charges. Stephen Craig Whalen, 45, of Cen­tral Street, is charged with pos­ses­sion for the pur­pose of traf­fick­ing in co­caine and pos­ses­sion for the pur­pose of traf­fick­ing in mar­i­juana. The of­fences al­legedly oc­curred Dec. 17, 2014, in Syd­ney. He was sched­uled to stand trial in Fe­bru­ary. A date was also set Tues­day for a Charter of Rights and Free­doms ap­pli­ca­tion that is sched­uled to be heard June 13. Such ap­pli­ca­tions are com­mon as an ac­cused al­leges any num­ber of their civil rights in the charter were breached by the ar­rest and sub­se­quent charge. Should Whalen still be or­dered to trial af­ter the charter ar­gu­ment, the hear­ing is sched­uled for Jan. 4.
