New trial date set for Sydney man facing drug charges
SYDNEY — A new provincial court trial date was set Tuesday for a Sydney man facing drug charges. Stephen Craig Whalen, 45, of Central Street, is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking in cocaine and possession for the purpose of trafficking in marijuana. The offences allegedly occurred Dec. 17, 2014, in Sydney. He was scheduled to stand trial in February. A date was also set Tuesday for a Charter of Rights and Freedoms application that is scheduled to be heard June 13. Such applications are common as an accused alleges any number of their civil rights in the charter were breached by the arrest and subsequent charge. Should Whalen still be ordered to trial after the charter argument, the hearing is scheduled for Jan. 4.
