Glace Bay man sen­tenced to jail and pro­ba­tion

SYD­NEY — A Glace Bay man has re­ceived a jail sen­tence and pro­ba­tion af­ter plead­ing guilty to sev­eral charges. Derek Wil­liam Somer­ton, 42, of Dol­phin Crest pleaded guilty to two counts of breach­ing court or­ders, and sin­gle counts of as­sault­ing a police of­fi­cer, as­sault (in­volv­ing a fe­male), forcible con­fine­ment, and mis­chief (dam­ag­ing a ve­hi­cle). He was given credit for 63 days on re­mand and must now serve a four-month sen­tence fol­lowed by 18 months on pro­ba­tion. Among the con­di­tions of his pro­ba­tion, Somer­ton is to have no con­tact with the fe­male in­volved in the as­sault and sur­ren­der all firearm li­cences.
