Accused to resume serving federal sentence
SYDNEY — A Glace Bay man already serving a seven-year sentence for manslaughter recorded another conviction Tuesday in pleading guilty to breaching a court order. Morgan James MacNeil, 25, was sentenced to one day in jail served by his presence in court. He breached the order by having contact with one of several individuals he was ordered to refrain from contacting. MacNeil had spent 2.5 months on remand on the charge. He will now continue to serve his federal sentence, imposed last November, on a charge of manslaughter in connection with the 2012 death of Laura Catherine Jessome, 21, of Bras d’Or. The trial for a co-accused, Thomas Ted Barrett, 41, of Glace Bay, who is charged with firstdegree murder in connection with Jessome’s death, is expected to be set later this month. MacNeil is scheduled to return to provincial court July 10 for a trial on charges that include sexual assault. The offences are alleged to have occurred in August 2016 while MacNeil was being held at the Cape Breton Correctional Centre.
