It is with heavy hearts that we, the fam­ily of Jim Costello (80), an­nounce the pass­ing of our beloved hus­band, fa­ther, grand­fa­ther and great grand­fa­ther on Tues­day, Jan­uary 31st, at home sur­rounded by his lov­ing fam­ily and his fa­vorite mu­sic, af­ter a brief ill­ness.

Jim was born in Syd­ney and was the son of the late James Costello and the late Blanche Mol­lon. Jim spent over 40 years in North­side East Bay be­fore mov­ing to On­tario in 1996. Jim had a long and suc­cess­ful ca­reer of over 40 years in the au­to­mo­tive in­dus­try at Samp­son Mo­tors, Cape Breton Chrysler and Jim Samp­son Mo­tors in Syd­ney. Jim then ven­tured with his wife Joan to On­tario where he worked at R.J. Hen­der­son in Toronto for 7 years be­fore re­turn­ing to his much-loved Cape Breton in 2003 for his re­tire­ment. He was a well-re­spected per­son in his com­mu­nity and he was loved by many over the years. Jim could al­ways be found on the dance floor with his wife Joan and their good friends Bob and Effie and Ross and Archena. He loved life, mu­sic and es­pe­cially play­ing his key­boards at the re­tire­ment homes with Owen Bon­nell and their band Young At Heart. He was a mem­ber of the Cape Breton Chords­man for the past few years. One of his fa­vorite past times was golf ev­ery Satur­day with Odie, Jack, his son Glenn and which­ever son was home vis­it­ing.

Jim is sur­vived by his wife, Joan, who he adored and cel­e­brated 61 years of mar­riage on Jan­uary 23, 2017.; his sons, Jim (Trudy) Roth­say, NB, Wayne (Nathalie), Dart­mouth, NS, Wen­dell (Elaine), Burling­ton, ON, Keith (Regina), St. George’s Brant, ON, Glenn (Judy), West­mount, NS; his broth­ers, John (Mena), Sheeves Cove, NL, Don­ald (Jane), French­vale, NS, Kevin (Linda), Syd­ney Forks, NS; his sis­ters, Bertha, Syd­ney, NS, Doris Sar­nia, ON, Eileen (Mike), Toronto, ON, Nell (Jim), Bramp­ton, ON; his brother-in­laws, Cyril (Dot) and Lenny; his sis­ter-in-laws, Della (Joe), Myrna, Bar­bara and Ke­mer­ley; Poppy’s grand­chil­dren, Jenna, Chris­tian, Olivia, Adam, Ge­of­frey, Sarah, Joe, Steven, Mike, Tyler, Justin, Leah, Austin, Court­ney, Ryan, Shal­lon and Athea and Poppy’s great grand­chil­dren, Raine, McKay, Natalie, Melanie, Damon, Devin, Sierra, Caileigh and Abby.

He was pre­de­ceased by his fa­ther, Jim; mother, Blanche; broth­ers, Cyril, Bill, Gor­don, Gary; sis­ters, Kay and Shirley; grand­daugh­ter, Ni­cole and brother-in law, Veto

Spe­cial thanks to his brother Kevin for vis­it­ing ev­ery day and lift­ing his spir­its, his niece Sharon Whe­lan for her tremen­dous help during his last days, his daugh­ter-in-law Judy for sup­port over the last cou­ple of months, the VON & Pal­lia­tive Care.

There will be a vis­i­ta­tion Fri­day, Fe­bru­ary 3, from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. in the SW Chant and Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexan­dra Street, Syd­ney. Funeral Mass Satur­day, Fe­bru­ary 4, 11 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Church, East Bay. Fa­ther Frank Ab­bass of­fi­ci­at­ing.

In lieu of flow­ers, do­na­tions may be made to the Pal­lia­tive Care Unit at the CB Re­gional Hospi­tal.
