Glace Bay revitalization group holding community mixer and winter market
Glace Bay group holding community mixer, winter market.
Members of a newly formed community group focusing on revitalizing Glace Bay has already rolled up their sleeves.
Michael Kelloway, chair of #bayitforward, said residents are invited to a community mixer on Feb. 24 at the Talo Cafébar on Commercial Street from 5-6 p.m. followed by a winter market at the Savoy Theatre at 6 p.m.
“The mixer will be a little overview of where we were, where we are and where we hope to be,” he said, adding it will be a structured hour with some treats.
Kelloway said they want to hear from the public, adding that #bayitforward has 794 Facebook members.
“We are looking for the public to come down and provide their thoughts in terms of projects, initiatives and any questions they might have.”
People will be asked to fill out a short survey about what they want to see for Glace Bay including ideas they may have and time they can commit.
He said whether a person has 15 minutes to donate or 15 hours, the person ‘is in.”
“If you have an idea … let’s talk about it. It’s building on assets, understanding we have challenges and that we’ve got to be all rowing in the same boat.”
The mixer will be live streamed on YouTube.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun with a lot of community engagement.” The group’s first initiative, a winter market, will follow at the Savoy.
Twenty vendors, businesses and crafters will have booths at the market. There is no charge for vendors to take part.
“We want to showcase some of the life we have in the community in terms of business,” he said.
Kelloway said the evening is a good chance for people of the area to support Glace Bay businesses and for Glace Bay businesses to support people of the area.
Mary Pat Mombourquette, the event co-ordinator for #bayitforward, said the winter market is a great reason to get out on a Friday night and enjoy downtown Glace Bay.
“It will be a fun evening, she said. “We are hoping everyone will come down as there will be lots happening, we’ll even have door prizes.”
