It is with great sad­ness that we the fam­ily an­nounce the pass­ing of our dear hus­band, father, grand­fa­ther, brother and friend, John James DeYoung, age 72, af­ter a brief ill­ness, on Thurs­day, Fe­bru­ary 2,2017 at the Cape Bre­ton Re­gional Hospi­tal, Syd­ney.

Born in Arichat, he was the son of Mrs. Idella (Boudreau) Duyon and the late Ed­ward Duyon.

He was a pa­tient man, a per­fec­tion­ist, a jack of all trades and a skilled car­pen­ter which was his la­bor of love. He al­ways had a project to cre­ate a beau­ti­ful home for our fam­ily. He was an avid pho­tog­ra­pher.

In his younger years, he was a gym­nast, a life guard, a dancer and a scuba

diver. He was al­ways will­ing to help any­one in need and to lend a help­ing hand.

Be­sides his mother, Idella, John is sur­vived by his wife and best friend, Jeanette (Bates) DeYoung; chil­dren, Laura (Les), Shawn (Lisa), Jonathan (Natalee) and Jon-Paul; his pre­cious grand­chil­dren, Lo­gan, Rian, Kay­den and Stephanie; sis­ter, Jean (Rob­bie) MacNeil; sev­eral nieces and neph­ews; the ex­tended Bates fam­ily, as well as his good friends, Ray, Earl and Cur­tis.

Be­sides his father, Ed­ward, he was pre­de­ceased by his mother and father in-law, Jen­nie and Paul Bates; sis­ter-in-law, Mary Heald; brother-in-law, Win­fred Bates.

Vis­i­ta­tion will be held Sun­day, Fe­bru­ary 5, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the SW Chant & Son Fu­neral Home, 564 Alexan­dra St., Syd­ney.

Fu­neral Mass will take place 11 a.m. Mon­day, Fe­bru­ary, 6, 2017 at Our Lady of Fa­tima Par­ish, Syd­ney River with Father Bill Burke of­fi­ci­at­ing. In­ter­ment to take place at a later date.
