On this date in 1970, a Liberian-registered oil tanker ran aground and split in two in Chedabucto Bay, off Isle Madame, Richmond Co., spilling more than 15,000 tonnes of bunker oil. An inquiry blamed improper navigation by the “Arrow,” which was heading from Venezuela for Cape Breton with 108,000 barrels of oil. Another 20,000 litres of oil was removed in October, 2015.
