Seals found shot to death
LITTLE JUDIQUE — Fisheries and Oceans Canada is investigating the deaths of five seals found shot on a beach near Little Judique this week. “On Wednesday, February 1, DFO received information alleg ing seals might have been shot on a beach in the Little Judique area,” said Krista Petersen, a DFO communications advisor on Friday evening. “Fishery officers were dispatched to patrol the area and discovered five seals which had been shot, An investigation is underway. Evidence has been collected. The seal carcasses have been removed from the beach as part of the investigation.” According to the Marine Mam mal Regulations, it’s illegal to disturb, harm or approach seals except during legal fishing periods. The seal harvest in that part of Cape Breton is not cur rently open. The seal involved in that incident also died.
