Seals found shot to death

LIT­TLE JUDIQUE — Fish­eries and Oceans Canada is in­ves­ti­gat­ing the deaths of five seals found shot on a beach near Lit­tle Judique this week. “On Wed­nes­day, Fe­bru­ary 1, DFO re­ceived in­for­ma­tion al­leg ing seals might have been shot on a beach in the Lit­tle Judique area,” said Krista Petersen, a DFO com­mu­ni­ca­tions ad­vi­sor on Fri­day evening. “Fish­ery of­fi­cers were dis­patched to pa­trol the area and dis­cov­ered five seals which had been shot, An in­ves­ti­ga­tion is un­der­way. Ev­i­dence has been col­lected. The seal car­casses have been re­moved from the beach as part of the in­ves­ti­ga­tion.” Ac­cord­ing to the Marine Mam mal Reg­u­la­tions, it’s il­le­gal to dis­turb, harm or ap­proach seals ex­cept dur­ing le­gal fish­ing pe­ri­ods. The seal har­vest in that part of Cape Bre­ton is not cur rently open. The seal in­volved in that in­ci­dent also died.
