The first Valen­tine’s Day card

The old­est sur­viv­ing valen­tine is said to have been penned by Charles, Duke of Or­leans, in 1415. The mis­sive—a love poem des­tined to his wife—was writ­ten while the young duke was im­pris­oned in the Tower of Lon­don af­ter be­ing cap­tured at the Bat­tle of Agin­court.
