No foul play in man’s death
SYDNEY — Police have ruled out foul play in the death of a Sydney man whose body was found inside a vacant building in Whitney Pier. The unidentified 57-year-old was discovered by firefighters Monday night while they were responding to a fire at the two-storey structure on Robert Street. Cape Breton Regional Police said Wednesday the death is not considered suspicious and that the man’s body has been sent for autopsy. Police and the fire marshal remained on the scene Wednesday continuing their investigation into the cause of the fire. While the man’s name has not been released, people who live in the neighbourhood told the Cape Breton Post he was a homeless person likely seeking shelter in the building. Building owner Danny Ellis said the building was already slated for demolition. A company he owns purchased the property from the Cape Breton Regional Municipality in January with plans to tear it down and build a seniors complex. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to phone police at 902-5635151 or Crime Stoppers at 902-562-8477.
