Mandolese stellar in Eagles win over Phoenix
Kevin Mandolese stopped 45 of 46 shots to backstop the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles to a 4-1 win over the Sherbrooke Phoenix at Palais des Sports Léopold-Drolet on Friday.
The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Screaming Eagles that saw losses to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan and Saint John Sea Dogs last weekend at Centre 200.
Cape Breton opened the scoring early with Phélix Martineau scoring his 24th goal of the season 34 seconds into the opening frame to give the Screaming Eagles the lead.
The Screaming Eagles extended their lead with Ross MacDougall’s marker at 15:19 of the second period, making the score 2-0.
Sherbrooke cut the Cape Breton lead to one midway through the third period with a goal by Nicolas Poulin, snapping Mandolese’s shutout bid, but the Screaming Eagles answered shortly after with a Tyler Hylland goal at 10:19 of the final frame.
The Screaming Eagles secured the win with Giovanni Fiore scoring his 41st goal of the season into an empty net with 40 seconds remaining in regulation time.
Cape Breton’s Mandolese improved his record to 13-5-00. Evan Fitzpatrick stopped 24 of 27 shots in the loss for Sherbrooke, dropping his record to 12-20-1-2.
The Screaming Eagles will continue their six-game Quebec road swing on Sunday when they play the Victoriaville Tigres at 5 p.m. at Colisée Desjardins in Victoriaville, Que. The last meeting between two teams came on Dec. 3, a 3-2 Screaming Eagles win at Centre 200.
