TV games raise money

Cape Breton Post - - COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS - Debra Murray

The Kiwanis Golden K Club of Sydney has been partnered under contract with Eastlink TV for more than 30 years to provide weekly TV bingo games that last an hour to Eastlink customers.

The games are broadcast on channel 10 each Wednesday evening at 6 and Eastlink donates the facility, airtime and technical expertise required.

This is the primary fundraising event Golden K has yearly. Our partnership with Eastlink is appreciated and vital. Without proceeds from TV bingo games, without Eastlink TV’s consistent support of our club, we’d be unable to donate funding of any magnitude to so many local projects and charities each year.

Bingo cards cost $6 each at 35 locations around the municipality. Viewers must call the designated TV bingo phone number as soon as they have bingo and they will be given further directions. Later, the winning card is mailed to our bingo committee treasurer who verifies the card before mailing any cheques. The games strictly adhere to Nova Scotia Gaming Commission rules.

Each week Golden K members run six $200 games, plus a jackpot game starting at $3,000. If the jackpot isn’t won in a predetermined number of balls, we play through for a prize of $500. This means the minimum prize money we award each week is $1,700. That’s impressive.

We also have a loonie or lucky ball pot, into which $1 from each bingo card sold is placed, and then one lucky ball is drawn each game night. If someone gets bingo in the lucky ball draw they win the entire loonie pot. We sell roughly 700-800 cards per week so the pot can certainly grow. We’ve actually been known to give away as much as $12,000 to $15,000 twice yearly to a lucky individual just on the bonus pot alone.

The Kiwanis TV bingo committee, one of 23 different committees on which our members proudly serve, is made up of seven teams of three Kiwanians each. The members man the phones and the control room for two weeks and then each other team takes over in their turn.

Helping with TV bingo weekly, we have a gentleman who delivers the cards to the more than 40 different purchase locations and later returns to collect the monies raised. We also have a bingo caller. These men are not Kiwanians, but have been with us since TV bingo’s inception. They receive an honorarium for their dedication to Kiwanis Golden K.

The treasurer of the Kiwanis Golden K TV bingo committee pays any bills and awards all prizes weekly. Remaining proceeds from this TV bingo event are turned over to the general fund of the Golden K Club of Sydney and are later distributed to community projects and groups in need who’ve made a successful application to us for funding. Distribution of funds raised takes place only after approval from our dedicated board of directors.

As with any and all, Kiwanis Golden K committees, should any TV bingo volunteer be unable to fulfill his or her duty at any time, hands will fly in the air at our weekly meeting offering to be a replacement. We are a tightknit group, dedicated to our cause and continuously willing to assist and support each other.
