It is with great sad­ness and love that we, the fam­ily, an­nounce the pass­ing of John “Butch” McGil­livray, 71, on Fe­bru­ary 15th, 2017 at the Cape Bre­ton Re­gional Hospi­tal, sur­rounded by his lov­ing fam­ily.

Butch was a lov­ing fa­ther, grand­fa­ther, great-grand­fa­ther and brother. He was born on July 21st, 1945 in New Water­ford to the late An­gus and Mar­garet (Grat­ton) McGil­livray.

Butch was pre­de­ceased by his wife and friend, Arthina (Slade) McGil­livray. He is sur­vived by his daugh­ter, Michelle (Tony) Leudy; brother, Charles (He­len); sis­ter, Selma (Bill) MacGuire; grand­chil­dren, Brit­tany (Tim) MacLeod, Tan­ner and Lakyn; two great-grand­chil­dren, Posey and Aker; neph­ews, Scott McGil­livray, Larry, Gus, and Sean McGuire; and niece, Erin Billings.

Butch was a hard work­ing mas­ter me­chanic for most of his life. He in­stinc­tively knew when we needed him; sup­port­ing us in all as­pects of our lives, ex­pect­ing noth­ing in re­turn. He was a quiet and gen­tle soul who loved his fam­ily deeply. He will be for­ever missed. Cre­ma­tion has taken place. A gath­er­ing of fam­ily and friends will be held on Mon­day, Fe­bru­ary 20, 2017 from noon un­til the time of the ser­vice at 2 p.m. in V.J. McGil­livray Fu­neral Home Chapel, 380 Smith St., New Water­ford with Dea­con Leo Penny of­fi­ci­at­ing.

A lun­cheon will fol­low in St. Leonard’s Par­ish Hall, Con­vent Street, New Water­ford.

Do­na­tions in his mem­ory may be made to the Intensive Care Unit at the Cape Bre­ton Re­gional Hospi­tal, Syd­ney.
