Capers women end regular season with win over Huskies
The Cape Breton Capers women’s basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a win, defeating the Saint Mary’s Huskies 57-41 on Saturday at Sullivan Fieldhouse.
The Capers finished with a 13-7 record on the season for third place in the conference. Saturday’s victory also snapped a five-game losing streak, after Saint Mary’s squeaked out a 65-63 win to open the two-game set on Friday.
Jalynn Skeir led the Capers with a game-high 16 points in the low-scoring affair, nine of which came from beyond the arc. Colleen Keane followed with 12 points and 12 boards. It was the final game on home court for graduating seniors Skeir, Keane and Natasha Roach.
The Capers held a 27-19 lead at the half.
For SMU (15-5), KennishaShanice Luberisse paced her club with 11 points and Katrina Murrell scored nine off the bench.
The Capers begin play in the quarter-final round of the 2017 Subway Atlantic University Sport Women’s Basketball Championship at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax. They’ll play the No. 6 Memorial Sea-Hawks on Friday at 3 p.m., with the winner to face the No. 2 New Brunswick Varsity Reds in the semifinal on Saturday at 3 p.m. The final is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Capers men concluded the regular season on Saturday with a 70-66 setback to the Huskies. CBU finished with an 0-20 record and out of the playoffs.
Kyle Hankins scored 23 points for the Capers in the loss, while Kenny Jean-Louis followed with 16. CBU trailed 34-24 at halftime.
Theon Reefer of the Huskies led all scorers with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Brian Rouse followed with 16.
