Capers women end reg­u­lar sea­son with win over Huskies

The Cape Bre­ton Capers women’s bas­ket­ball team wrapped up the reg­u­lar sea­son with a win, de­feat­ing the Saint Mary’s Huskies 57-41 on Sat­ur­day at Sul­li­van Field­house.

The Capers fin­ished with a 13-7 record on the sea­son for third place in the con­fer­ence. Sat­ur­day’s vic­tory also snapped a five-game los­ing streak, af­ter Saint Mary’s squeaked out a 65-63 win to open the two-game set on Fri­day.

Ja­lynn Skeir led the Capers with a game-high 16 points in the low-scor­ing affair, nine of which came from be­yond the arc. Colleen Keane fol­lowed with 12 points and 12 boards. It was the fi­nal game on home court for grad­u­at­ing se­niors Skeir, Keane and Natasha Roach.

The Capers held a 27-19 lead at the half.

For SMU (15-5), Ken­nishaShan­ice Lu­berisse paced her club with 11 points and Ka­t­rina Mur­rell scored nine off the bench.

The Capers be­gin play in the quar­ter-fi­nal round of the 2017 Sub­way At­lantic Univer­sity Sport Women’s Bas­ket­ball Cham­pi­onship at Sco­tia­bank Cen­tre in Hal­i­fax. They’ll play the No. 6 Me­mo­rial Sea-Hawks on Fri­day at 3 p.m., with the win­ner to face the No. 2 New Brunswick Var­sity Reds in the semi­fi­nal on Sat­ur­day at 3 p.m. The fi­nal is set for Sun­day at 1 p.m.

The Capers men con­cluded the reg­u­lar sea­son on Sat­ur­day with a 70-66 set­back to the Huskies. CBU fin­ished with an 0-20 record and out of the play­offs.

Kyle Hank­ins scored 23 points for the Capers in the loss, while Kenny Jean-Louis fol­lowed with 16. CBU trailed 34-24 at half­time.

Theon Reefer of the Huskies led all scor­ers with 20 points and 11 re­bounds. Brian Rouse fol­lowed with 16.
