Sis­ter Mar­garet MacKillop died peace­fully on Sat­ur­day, Fe­bru­ary 25, 2017, at the CND Health Care Cen­tre, Syd­ney.

Born in South West Ridge, Mabou, NS, on May 15, 1914, she was the daugh­ter of the late Fin­lay and Anna Belle (Chisholm) MacKillop.

She en­tered the Con­gre­ga­tion of Notre Dame in 1933 and made pro­fes­sion in Au­gust, 1935. Upon pro­fes­sion, Sis­ter Mar­garet be­gan what would be a lengthy ca­reer as a high school teacher, min­is­ter­ing for 23 years in the Syd­ney area. She then served as prin­ci­pal and lo­cal com­mu­nity leader for the next 6 years in St. John’s con­vent, New Glas­gow. Af­ter sev­eral years as Pro­vin­cial Bur­sar for the Con­gre­ga­tion, Mar­garet re­turned to the class­room, teach­ing in Iona and Mabou. Upon re­tire­ment from the school sys­tem Mar­garet be­gan a ‘sec­ond’ ca­reer in Re­li­gious Ed­u­ca­tion and Pas­toral Min­istry which took her to Larry’s River, NS, Evans­burg, AB, Chatham, NB, Syd­ney Mines and Mabou. Dur­ing those many years, Mar­garet proved her­self to be an ex­cel­lent teacher and ad­min­is­tra­tor, as well as a ded­i­cated mem­ber of her re­li­gious con­gre­ga­tion.

In 2009, Sis­ter Mar­garet moved to our as­sisted liv­ing fa­cil­ity at Holy Redeemer Con­vent, Whit­ney Pier. In 2011, her health de­clin­ing, Mar­garet en­tered the CND Health Care Cen­ter, where she con­tin­ued her min­istry of prayer for the ded­i­cated care givers who so lov­ingly min­is­tered to her. To all of them we are deeply grate­ful.

Sis­ter Mar­garet was the last sur­viv­ing mem­ber of her im­me­di­ate fam­ily. She was pre­de­ceased by her sis­ter, Lil­lian, CND and her broth­ers, Alex Rory, Dun­can and Colin. She is sur­vived by sev­eral nieces, neph­ews, grand-nieces and grand-neph­ews whom she loved dearly.

Vis­i­ta­tion for Sis­ter Mar­garet will be held in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou, Tues­day, Fe­bru­ary 28, at 1 p.m. Li­turgy of Chris­tian burial will take place at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bernard MacDon­ald of­fi­ci­at­ing. In­ter­ment will be in St. Mary’s Par­ish Ceme­tery, Mabou.
