Death count rises amid Venezuela un­rest

CARA­CAS, Venezuela — A 20-year-old man who was shot in the head is the lat­est pro­tester to die as mount­ing un­rest in Venezuela en­ters its sec­ond month.

Hecder Lugo died Fri­day after be­ing shot in the in­dus­trial city of Va­len­cia, which was the scene of mas­sive protests and loot­ing Thurs­day.

At least 38 deaths have been re­ported by var­i­ous sources in five weeks of anti-govern­ment protests, though the pub­lic pros­e­cu­tor puts the tally at 37. An­other 700 peo­ple have been in­jured. Va­len­cia was quiet Fri­day af­ter­noon, with many busi­nesses burned out and garbage strewn through empty streets. Sol­diers ar­rested of dozens of peo­ple they ac­cused of par­tic­i­pat­ing in the vi­o­lence.
